Jean Kerrigan MBE, a volunteer with Age Concern Crosby, has become the second recipient of the Sefton CVS Community Award which was launched last year. This award is designed to recognise an individual who has given ‘outstanding and selfless service to the voluntary sector and the wider community in the borough’.
Miss Kerrigan is celebrating half a century of volunteering with Age Concern Crosby this year. Her involvement with the organisation dates back to 1962 when the organisation was still known as Crosby Old People’s Welfare Committee.
Over the past 50 years, she has played a key role in providing a wide range of support for local older people including the charity’s visiting service, volunteer drivers and luncheon clubs and other social activities.
She is particularly proud of the holiday schemes which provide much-needed breaks for older people and respite for their families and carers.
Miss Kerrigan received her award from the Mayor of Sefton, Councillor Kevin Cluskey, at Sefton CVS’s recent AGM at the Salvation Army’s new community facility on Shakespeare Street in Southport.
Cllr Cluskey said that Sefton was fortunate in having so many enthusiastic and hard-working volunteers, but that Miss Kerrigan’s achievements were remarkable, even by the borough’s very high standards.
Sefton CVS Chief Executive, Angela White, commented: “Miss Kerrigan’s record of community service is outstanding which is why we were delighted to present her with this award.
“Over the past 50 years she has been a powerful voice for the needs of older people in Crosby, and helped to improve the lives of thousands of local residents. She should be very proud of her achievements.”
We had a Jubilee party
BUNTING and balloons decorated Christ Church hall, Waterloo, where a jubilee party for the town's senior citizens and housebound took place.
Organised by Age Concern, Crosby (formerly Crosby Old Peoples Welfare), the celebration saw more than 40 members of the town's housebound club and Christ Church and St John’s Luncheon Clubs sit down to a three course lunch and entertainment followed by afternoon tea and jubilee cake.
Musical entertainment was provided by Age Concern Crosby chairman Chris Dale, soprano Claire Hyams and pianist Ann Dickinson MBE. The party was made possible by generous donations from the Benefiting Older People Fund (Sefton Council), Age UK, Soroptimist International of Crosby and Gillions of College Road and I would like to thank them all for their support. It was a memorable afternoon, enjoyed by all.

Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson supports Age Concern Crosby fundraising event
Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson attended Age Concern Crosby's fundraising coffee morning on Saturday 07/10/13.
The MP joined Age Concern Crosby supporters at the Haigh Road Day Centre.
Visitors had the chance to not only enjoy a coffee, but also treat themselves to some home made cakes while also picking up a bargain or a handmade skincare product from new Thornton business Green Bubble.
Age Concern Crosby chairman Chris Dale told Bill that fundraising events are held at the day centre at least twice a year.
Chris said: "We have a very active social calendar hear at Age Concern Crosby. We have two fundraising events a year. We run luncheon clubs and we run annual holidays.
"We also take some of our service users on day trips in our minibus several times a year and we always have a Christmas lunch in each of our clubs prior to Christmas. If anyone knows a friend or relative who would like to attend our weekly clubs they will be made very welcome. Just contact our office or send their details through our website.
"Each time we hold these fundraisers, we always gets lots of support from the community of Crosby and further afield.
"While the fundraising is vital for us to continue the work we do here in Crosby, our community events also give us the chance to raise awareness about the work that we do.
"We are currently appealing for volunteers. Anyone who can spare a few hours a week to help would be made most welcome. Just give us a call and we can give you more information."
Bill said he was delighted to support Age Concern Crosby.
Bill said: "Age Concern Crosby does fantastic work in our community. They provide support and care for people here in our community who need it.
"Elderly people here in Crosby, Blundellsands, Brighton-le-Sands, Thornton, Waterloo & Seaforth, have access to the excellent services that Age Concerns Crosby offers.
"I was delighted to meet members of the committee on Saturday at their coffee morning fundraiser as well as some of the people who benefit from the services Age Concern Crosby provide.
"I urge anyone with any spare time to contact the centre and get involved."

Age Concern Crosby launch urgent appeal for helpers

A POSTER campaign launches this week by Age Concern Crosby (Old People’s Welfare) to recruit volunteers deperately needed if a weekly luncheon club is to survive.
Run for more than 40 years at Christ Church Hall, Alexandra Road, Waterloo (Monday and Wednesday) and the St John's Centre, Denmark Street, Waterloo, (Thursdays) the club provides local senior citizens with a home-cooked two-course lunch. Just as important though is the opportunity to meet and chat with other people in a friendly atmosphere.
Last week the 17 senior citizens attending were told that unless more volunteers come forward to help, the club will have to change from weekly to monthly sessions with the warning that it may yet face complete closure.
