Age Concern bags £4,000
from
Tesco community grant
Age Concern Crosby has bagged a £4,000 grant from supermarket Tesco to extend its work in supporting the lonely and elderly in the area.
The donation came about after customers in the Waterloo, Crosby, Thornton and Litherland stores voted for the charity in its Bags of Help community grant scheme. The competition was run in partnership with environmental charity, Groundwork and distributes cash raised from the sale of carrier bags across its UK stores.
This vital contribution will allow the charity to grow its work in bringing older people together for luncheon clubs, outings and holidays.
Chris Dale, administrator of Age Concern Crosby, said the charity’s aim was to enhance the quality of life of older people in the community by providing opportunities to engage and socialise.
“We are delighted to have this support from Tesco and its customers. We have weekly luncheon clubs at Christ Church, Waterloo and St John’s Centre, Waterloo. Alongside this we have a weekly lunch for housebound members. All of these services are made possible through the efforts of a team of dedicated volunteers. This generous donation will allow us to build on our current success and enhance the opportunities for members,” he said.
Alec Brown, Tesco’s head of Community, said the supermarket had been overwhelmed by the response from customers.
“It’s such a special scheme because it is local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. Voting ran in stores throughout May and June with customers choosing which local project they would like to get the top award using a token given to them at the checkout,” he said.

Kept him chatting for a while, think he sounded a tad frustrated when after a few minutes of instructions “press this button, click on that” etc I asked him if I needed to switch the computer on first “yes of course you do! Everyone knows that” - I asked him how I did that “you don’t know how to switch a computer on, how do you normally do it?” - told him my husband normally does that as I get it wrong but he is out at the moment. He took me through how to switch it on and I told him I had.....but when I eventually couldn’t find the key he needed me to press I said perhaps they don’t have them on my Apple computer”"....... call ended. The call was from Germany. It is disgraceful that overseas cold calls cannot be blocked.

Think Jessica, Awareness day On Scam Mail & Phone calls.
Today we made our service users aware of the dangers of scam mail and phone calls. We had a chat about the subject and how important it is to destroy scam mail and ignore scam phone calls. We gave out the number for the Royal Maill Scam Mail Hotline 08456 113 416 everyone thanked us for the infomation!

Popular lunch clubs to continue after £5k charity donation
A CROSBY charity has been given a £5,000 cash boost so volunteers can continue to run a popular lunch club for elderly people.
Age Concern Crosby got the large grant from Santander as part of the bank's Foundation’s Community Plus initiative which provides funds for any projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities.
The local organisation has been running weekly lunch clubs for more than 50 years and this donation will enable this project to continue for elderly residents.
The clubs, serving the areas of Crosby, Waterloo, Seaforth, Blundells and Thornton, help local pensioners avoid loneliness while ensuring they enjoy a good meal.
The grant will also support the running costs and maintenance of the charity’s minibus which provides transport to the lunch club as well as to various organised day trips across the year.
Chris Dale, Chairman at Age Concern Crosby said: “We are overwhelmed with this donation from the Santander Foundation. The lunch clubs are for many elderly people the only contact they have with the outside world and we are so pleased to be able to continue this invaluable service. ”
Age Concern Crosby was founded 60 years ago under the banner of ‘Crosby Old Peoples Welfare' and the service also offers day trips for members.
Mark Walton, Branch Manager at Santander’s Crosby branch said: “The Santander Foundation makes hundreds of donations every year to good causes throughout the UK. Our branch is committed to the community and we are delighted to be helping Age Concern Crosby and hope the donation makes a real difference to local people.”
If you would like to support Age Concern Crosby, they will be holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday, May 31 between 10am - 1pm at Waterloo Park Day Centre, Haigh Road, Waterloo and admission is £1.
